My favourite five new openings in 2010, with apologies to Cantina Laredo…

Hawksmoor, Seven Dials
Thanks to their kimchi burgers, the finest steaks in London and a cocktail list bursting with fizzes and juleps, Hawksmoor avoided the difficult second restaurant syndrome with style.

Dishoom, Covent Garden
Such an accurate and carefully thought out reconstruction of a retro Bombay cafe, Dishoom somehow makes you nostalgic for a place and time you’ve never been.
